‘Delivering Net-Zero Carbon Buildings - a new skillset for the future’

The aim of this session is to bring together experts who will share their views on the skills needed now and in the future, to meet the challenge for radical transformation across the Built Environment. We will also be polling attendees on the big questions posed over the course of the event. A brief will be written following this, to feed into the UKGBC’s ‘Whole Life Carbon Road Map’ that they are taking to COP-26.
Background: Under a new climate law, the EU has committed to cut carbon emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared with 1990 levels. The UK’s commitments are by 2035, to have cut carbon emissions by 78%. This is a huge undertaking and to meet these commitments, we need to halve the energy use of the UK’s buildings over the next 9 years, by making buildings energy efficient and fit for the future. Transforming homes, offices etc into energy efficient, net zero carbon buildings, will require strategic thinking, new materials and new products. This will create the need for new, greener jobs which will require new skills as well as a climate decision making, and reflection embedded into every one of these roles. There is a huge amount of work to do and the challenge is too great for any one organisation to tackle alone. To understand and address the skills gap requires collaboration and knowledge-sharing across sectors.
